In this study of conservatism in the early national period, Harlow Sheidley focuses on the Boston-based leadership of Massachusetts during the years following the War of 1812. These privileged heirs of the eighteenth-century republican vision embraced a hierarchical, organic, and defernetial view of society. Paradoxically, their role in America's burgeoning market economy laid the foundation for a new industrial order that would make the ethos they espoused obsolete.
